As summer arrives and daylight stretches well into the evening, our June monochrome challenge is ‘The Long Days’.

June offers photographers a unique opportunity. The extended daylight hours provide more time to explore with a camera and discover the world in a different way. From the first light of dawn to the lingering glow of sunset, the long days of summer create countless opportunities for striking monochrome images.

One of the greatest advantages of this season is the quality and variety of light available throughout the day. Early morning and late evening light can create beautiful, elongated shadows that add depth, drama and atmosphere to an image. Strong sunlight can produce bold contrasts, while softer light can reveal subtle textures and tones. In monochrome photography, light and shadow become powerful compositional tools, helping to shape a scene, emphasise a subject, and guide the viewer’s eye through the frame.
Think about how shadows can become subjects in their own right. A long shadow stretching across a pavement, sunlight filtering through trees, silhouettes against a bright sky, or patterns cast by architecture can all create compelling monochrome photographs. The absence of colour encourages us to focus on form, texture, contrast and mood, making light and shadow central elements of the image.
The theme is open to interpretation. Your photograph might capture a peaceful sunrise, a busy summer afternoon, a quiet evening landscape, people enjoying the outdoors, or simply the play of light across an everyday scene. Whether you photograph landscapes, beaches, street scenes, architecture, wildlife, portraits or abstract details, consider how the longer days and changing light can influence your image.

I look forward to seeing how you interpret ‘The Long Days‘ and how you use light and shadow to tell your stories. So make the most of those extra hours of daylight, head out with your camera, and let the summer light inspire your monochrome creativity.
