Monthly Challenges 2026 AUGUST – In The Moment

Some photographs are carefully planned. Others happen in an instant.

Photography is often described as the art of freezing time, capturing a single fraction of a second that can never be repeated. Our August monochrome challenge, In the Moment, invites you to seek out those fleeting instants that tell a story, evoke an emotion or reveal something extraordinary in everyday life.

A great photograph doesn’t always require a dramatic subject. Sometimes it is the brief exchange of a glance between two strangers, the joy of a child playing, (or in this instance a little girl bonding with her Grandad ) a bird taking flight, the anticipation before a race begins, or the quiet reflection of someone lost in thought. These are the moments that disappear almost as quickly as they appear, making them all the more rewarding to capture.
Monochrome photography is perfectly suited to this theme. By removing colour, we focus on the essence of the image—expression, gesture, light, shadow, texture and composition. A split second of laughter, determination or surprise can become the entire story, inviting the viewer to imagine what happened just before and what might happen next.

This challenge is also about being present. Slow down, observe your surroundings and anticipate what might unfold. Sometimes the perfect image comes from patiently waiting for everything to come together; at other times it is about trusting your instincts and reacting in an instant. Whether you enjoy street photography, wildlife, portraits, sport, landscapes or abstract photography, there are moments waiting to be discovered everywhere.

As always, this theme is open to your own interpretation. Look for the decisive moment, the unexpected encounter, the perfect play of light, or the emotion that lasts only a heartbeat. Challenge yourself to create an image that could not have been taken a second earlier or a second later.

Some ideas to inspire you:

  • A shared laugh – Friends chatting on a park bench or strangers sharing an unexpected smile.
  • The decisive moment – A cyclist passing through dramatic shadows, a child jumping into the sea, or a bird taking flight.
  • Emotion – Joy, concentration, surprise, sadness or quiet contemplation captured naturally.
  • Wildlife – An owl landing, a fox glancing at the camera, a bee collecting pollen, or two birds interacting.
  • Street life – People crossing roads, musicians performing, café life, markets, commuters or festivals.
  • Sport and action – A tennis serve, a football tackle, a runner crossing the finish line or a horse clearing a jump.
  • Nature – Waves breaking, leaves caught in the wind, rain arriving, or sunlight breaking through clouds.
  • Everyday life – Steam rising from a coffee cup, a baker removing bread from the oven, someone reading by a window, or a dog shaking off water.

The key question to ask is:

Could this exact photograph have been taken a second earlier or a second later?

If the answer is no, then you’ve probably captured the moment.
That single, unrepeatable instant is what this month’s challenge is all about.

As always, photos can be taken at any time
